“EMPOWER THE DISEMPOWERED"

HOW THE POPULATION BENEFITS

3 billion people in the developing world continue to use wood, dung, crop waste, and coal. This burning of biomass and release toxic smoke from cooking fumes is one of the leading causes of death and disease. CEDESOL provides a solution through the introduction of clean cook-stoves. Solar cookers produce no pollution and efficient combustion of fuel allows rocket stoves to remove 95% of noxious particles from the home.

HOW ECOLOGICAL COOKERS WORK

Rocket stoves requires only 25-30% of the fuel consumed by a traditional stove and converts 42% of of its total potential energy into thermal energy. For this reason, clean cook-stoves are beneficial to the health, environment, and education of the women and children utilizing the stove. Less toxic fumes, carbon emissions, and time spent gathering wood during classtime means a better standard of living for people in rural Bolivia.

WHY WE ARE UNIQUE

CEDESOL uniquely has a 92% retention rate in clean cook-stoves because of our Modular Environmental Training (MET) program. Students, parents, and teachers learn about waste management, the 3 R’s, and environmentally-friendly habits. Students implement “green patrols" throughout their schools and become agents of change within their own community.

BREATHE CLEAN AIR

NOT SO FUN FACTS

  • 3 billion people around the world cook and heat their homes using an open fire
  • 4.3 million people die prematurely each year from indoor air pollution
  • Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection is the number one cause of mortality for children under 5, 2 million annual deaths
  • 82% of Bolivia’s rural population lives in poverty
  • 36% and 18% of youth ages 15-24 have not completed secondary school and primary school, respectively
  • Families living in extreme poverty spend 1/3 of their household income purchasing cooking fuel (wood, LPG gas, biomass)

FUN FACTS

  • CEDESOL’s rocket stoves remove 95% of noxious particle in the home due to efficient combustion of fuel
  • Rocket stoves require 25-30% of the fuel consumed by a conventional open fire
  • Over 10,000 solar cookers and rocket stoves distributed
  • 500,000 tons of carbon offset
  • UNESCO policy paper states that world poverty can be cut in half if all adults complete secondary school
